Terrafirma Ceramics was founded in 1980 by artist Ellen Evans in New York City. Her original path toward archaeology - with an emphasis on Ancient Greek pottery -sparked her passion for the ceramic arts. As she developed her ceramic skills, her focus turned toward making rather than studying. Her goal is to create functional but beautiful pieces that can be collected and used every day. Terrafirma Ceramics - with the happy addition of her daughter, Jessica - handcrafts every piece of functional American art Pottery in Queens, NY.
Every piece of Terrafirma is created with a signature process. The clay body is sourced from different parts of the United States - Tennessee, Misissippi, Ohio and Pennsylvania - to create our unique stoneware formula. The clay is extremely durable and vitrified, making it completely dishwasher safe. Patterns are painted through lace using liquid porcelain. The base of warm, natural stoneware juxtaposed with vibrantly colored and patterned porcelain surfaces achieves the casual yet sophisticated look that has become her signature in both dinnerware and accessories.
“In our homes today, we want beautiful artistic objects that we can use comfortably everyday. My goal is to design tableware that enriches the presentation of food and in itself makes an elegant statement…yet is practical and durable enough for constant use. Please enjoy using and giving Terrafirma.”
